Canelo Feels Pressure For The Benavidez Fight - Says Jose Benavidez Sr

Canelo Alvarez is feeling the pressure to face David Benavidez moving forward.

That is according to the Mexican Monster’s trainer Jose Benavidez Sr. Benvidez is currently preparing to face Demetrius Andrade in a bout between two undefeated fighters on November 25th, 2023. The WBC has ruled that the winner will become the mandatory for Canelo’s undisputed super middleweight title.

Benavidez is the massive favorite against Andrade, as a fight with Alvarez has been talked about for some time. The former has been the WBC mandatory for over a year, and yet, a fight has not been made. Instead, Alvarez chose to face Jermell Charlo in his last fight as the 154-pounder moved up two weight classes in an uncompetitive fight. But the pressure to face Benavidez is not going to go away anytime soon.

Canelo Feeling The Pressure

“I believe there’s so much pressure from so many people. Wherever he goes, they mention David Benavidez, ‘The Mexican Monster. I think they’re just tired of hearing that name. Imagine if Canelo retires and doesn’t fight David, that’s going to haunt him for life. For us, it’s not a problem. For him, can he retire knowing that he didn’t want to fight the ‘Mexican Monster? Everywhere he goes, that name, it’s going to haunt him. It’s going to be there. So why not face him? He’s the face of boxing. He’s the best at 168,”  Jose Benavidez Sr. said

The narrative is in place for the fight if Benavidez does beat Andrade. Cinco de Mayo weekend and Mexican Independence Day would serve as the perfect dates for the mega clash. And with Canelo and PBC being under the same banner, it would make sense to put on the fight since Alvarez has two fights left under his PBC deal.

But in order to do that, the negotiations must take place. Alvarez is clearly the A-side since he holds all the belts. And since Benavidez is looking for that big title shot, the Mexican Monster will have to make concessions to get the fight over the line. But for Benavidez Sr, he was still optimistic that a fight could happen.

Will The Fight Happen?

“Hopefully, Canelo will wake up and say, ‘I want Benavidez next,’ and that’ll happen right away because we want to fight him. Negotiations will not be bad. Let’s do it. We’re more focused on getting the opportunity because if we beat Canelo, the skies are the limit,” said Jose Benavidez Sr.

Nevertheless, when Canelo was asked about facing Benavidez after the Charlo fight, the undisputed champion remained coy over who his next opponent would be. But with the rest of the division failing to offer up a competitive fight, a fight with Benavidez seems to be the natural course of action moving forward. So the question is will Canelo and Benavidez give the fans what they want? Time will tell how it all plays out in the future.
