Canelo Desperate For The Bivol Rematch – ‘That’s The Only Fight’

Canelo Alvarez is desperate to rematch Dmitry Bivol after claiming that he was not 100% in the first fight.
Canelo faced Bivol for his WBA Light Heavyweight Title as he moved up from super middleweight. Canelo had already secured a title at the weight class previously when he stopped Sergey Kovalev to becomw the WBO Light Heavyweight Champion, showing he could compete in the weight class. However, Canelo was dominated in a one-sided unanimous decision loss as Bivol retained his title.
Bivol would then go on to become the Undisputed Light Heavyweight Champion by defeating Artur Beterbiev in their rematch. Meanwhile, Canelo stayed super middleweight and continued to dominate, as he could become undisputed again if he beats William Scull in his next fight in May. However, there were circumstances heading into the Bivol fight which impacted Canelo.
Reports indicated that he had hand issues, as he later underwent surgery after the fight. Canelo has now revealed that his issues impacted him in training camp, even claiming that his former sparring partner would back that up. While that may be the case, Canelo ultimately lost the fight, meaning there were no excuses for his loss.
“I’ve gone through some difficult things in my life and the only thing you can do is try to continue and move forward. I’ve gone through difficult times recently with my defeat and I’ve actually shown defeats are great because it enables you to come back and show humility. I need surgery on my hand after this because I’m not good from my left hand. But I’m good, I’m a warrior, that’s why I’m here,” Canelo stated
Canelo On Bivol
However, if Canelo does beat Scull and then Terence Crawford in September, there is a chance he could move up to 175 pounds to secure that rematch. Bivol has already accomplished everything at light heavyweight, meaning that it would provide him an opportunity to earn another big purse against the cash cow in the sport. And Canelo was keen to secure that rematch to prove his doubters wrong.
“I would like to have that opportunity to have that rematch with Bivol. That’s the only fight at 175 that I would really take, but we’ll see. Not bothers me, but I want to tell myself, ‘You learned something from that fight. “What things you don’t need to do again’ I have that thing in myself, ‘You need to show you’re a better fighter than him…I have 50% of my abilities right there.
“No condition, no nothing, because I can’t run and I can’t throw like I do or do pads and do sparring. You can ask Alex Gvodzyk (Canelo’s sparring partner). He was there helping me for that fight. “I have like one month with no sparring because of my [injured] hand. I did a good fight, a very good fight, but not enough… “Oh, he’s good. He’s a very good fighter. You can see, and everybody says, ‘Oh, he’s nothing. He chose the fighter.’ “He’s a good fighter; he’s one of the best fighters out there,” Canelo said
