Canelo Backed To Beat McGregor In A Street Fight

Canelo Alvarez has been backed to beat Conor McGregor in a street fight.

That is according to Carl Froch. McGregor is currently out injured and has a broken toe. The injury prevented him from continuing his UFC 303 fight against Michael Chandler. McGregor expects to be back by September, but Dana White remained coy over any comeback, saying he would wait until McGregor recovers. The Notorious has not had an MMA fight since losing to Dustin Poirier at UFC 264 in 2021. That was his third defeat in his last four UFC bouts. While McGregor is a professional MMA fighter, Froch shockingly backed Alvarez to beat him in a street fight.

Froch On Canelo

“You always think a street fight is going to be favourable to the MMA fighter but I’m not so sure. I think the boxer would do the business on the street. I mean, if Conor McGregor gets a good kick in and takes Canelo to the ground, you’d think he’d have the grapple [advantage]. But I saw Savannah Marshall on the floor having a grapple and she did well. So, that shows you boxers can survive in the cage.

“I think Canelo Alvarez is too big, too strong, he’ll catch McGregor. It’s a close one on the street. They are not going to be fighting on the street anytime soon, but I’m going to pick the boxer over the MMA star Conor McGregor,” Froch said

Froch’s comments have to be taken with a pinch of salt. He is not on the best terms with McGregor after the two were linked with a fight. Froch even responded by stating that he could beat McGregor in a street fight. McGregor has been linked with another boxing fight, which could see him fight Canelo. The Irishman’s only boxing foray took place in 2017 when he faced Floyd Mayweather.

Would It Happen?

Mayweather stopped McGregor in round ten as the Irishman failed to withstand the late pressure. McGregor has previously said that Canelo is too flat-footed while talking up his southpaw stance. Canelo responded by stating that he would beat McGregor with one hand. While an MMA fight is unlikely, McGregor vs. Canelo could take place in the ring. But if it was an MMA fight, McGregor backed himself.

“Saul you uncooked chicken, I’ll stomp the ligaments out of your knee joint. I don’t even need hands to end you, I’ll kick you raw pink, leave you looking like you were left out in the sun too long haha freckle arse. I will see you and we will see. Canelo is a cornflake, no sugar,” McGregor stated

McGregor would understandably be a heavy favorite. He is a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, giving him a significant advantage on the gourd. He has also been wrestling since his teenage years. McGregor also possesses solid kicks, which are enough to take out any opponent. If a mixed-rules fight can be agreed upon, fans may see it. But for now, it is a long way off.
