Canelo Alvarez and Naoya Inoue are reportedly going to cross paths in Japan.

Reports indicate that Canelo will attend the Takuma Inoue fight on Sunday. Takumo is Inoue’s brother and will defend his WBA Bantamweight Title in the headline event against Seiya Tsutsumi. Canelo is interested in the event as his trainer, Eddy Reynoso, trains Cristofer Rosales, who will box against Kenshiro Teraji. Cristofer has the chance to win the vacant WBC Flyweight Title.

Canelo and Inoue are the two biggest stars in the sport of boxing. Canelo is described as the ‘cash cow’ of boxing. He defeated Edgar Berlanga in his last fight in an event that sold 650,000 PPVs. This was in addition to the live gate of $17 million. It went up against the UFC 306 card featuring Sean O’Malley and Merab Dvalishvili at The Sphere. There were concerns that Canelo could not compete with the UFC card since it was the first-ever event from The Sphere.

Dana White had also spent $20 million on the event. Canelo was expected to breeze past Berlanga in a non-competitive fight. Although it was a one-sided win for Alvarez, he still managed to earn a reported $35 million from the fight. That went on to show that Canelo did not have to face the biggest names. He could sell out against any of the other fighters. Inoue is equally a big commercial star. However, the Japanese has mostly made his name in his native country.

He is expected to face Sam Goodman next in a defense of his Undisputed Super Bantamweight Title. Bob Arum previously confirmed that Inoue would have one more fight in Japan before targeting a bout in the United States. If Canelo and Inoue do end up meeting, it is the perfect opportunity for both stars to showcase their brand to different markets.

Inoue has a massive fanbase in Japan, regularly selling out, which he hopes will translate into the United States. Meanwhile, Canelo is the biggest star, having made his name in Mexico, the US, and even the UK. He fought British boxers such as Billy Joe Saunders and Amir Khan. Canelo’s camp has previously suggested that the Mexican would be interested in fighting in Japan.

Canelo In Japan

“Team Canelo told me that they are not close to the offers that Turki [Alalshikh] makes, but if they beat [Edgar] Berlanga in September, as they hope, Canelo could fight in Japan in December. The plan is to go beyond the American continent,” Salvador Rodriguez (journalist) said

He is at the latter end of his career. Canelo is a four-weight world champion with nothing else to prove. Canelo has regularly been accused of ducking David Benavidez as the Mexican Monster moved up to 175 pounds after failing to get the fight at 168. While Canelo and Inoue do face accusations that they do not box the biggest names, a part of this is due to how they make their wins look so easy. Boxing fans were looking forward to the biggest stars in the world crossing paths.
