Canelo Alvarez Teases Retirement Timeline

Canelo Alvarez has given fans a hint over when he would like to retire.

Canelo is considered one of the best boxers of all time. He is a four-weight world champion, with titles spanning from 154-175 pounds. He is the current Unified Super Middleweight Champion. While he has a resume that rivals that of the best, he has been criticized for not boxing David Benavidez. The latter was the WBC Interim Super Middleweight Champion for over two years. Canelo demanded $150-200 million to make that fight, which was seen as a way to price himself out. Benavidez ultimately moved up to 175, making that fight less likely.

There are not too many fights out there for Canelo to pursue. He could take on the Dmitry Bivol rematch. But that would depend on how Bivol does against Artur Beterbiev on February 22 in their rematch. Beterbiev won the first fight via a majority decision to become the Undisputed Light Heavyweight Champion. A Bivol win makes him undisputed, giving Canelo more incentive to run things back with him at 175. Alternatively, there is the Terence Crawford fight. The Saudis have indicated their desire to make that fight happen.

Canelo’s Options

Canelo has given a mixed response towards this. He first dismissed the fight, stating that Crawford is simply too small. But since then, his comments have suggested the fight could happen if the right offer was made. Canelo is open to speaking to the Saudis, increasing the chances of the Crawford fight. There is also an outside chance of a Jake Paul fight.

Paul has repeatedly called out Canelo for his dream fight. It would earn the two boxers their biggest paydays. Canelo is also be a massive favorite in that fight since he would facing a novice boxer. Canelo recently said that he considered Paul after the latter’s win over Mike Tyson as a way to avenge that defeat. But Paul’s recent comments have suggested that he has moved on.

“Why the [hell] would I give him the payday?” When I beat him it would be the same [rubbish] and lies. “[They would say] that Canelo was too small and Jake Paul paid him off,” Paul stated

Canelo’s Future

Canelo is ultimately in a position to choose who he fights. He has secured his financial future from the sport, meaning he does not need to take too many risks. Canelo turned professional at the age of 15, having had over 60 professional fights. His record stands at 62-2-2. His only losses have come against Floyd Mayweather and Bivol. Canelo has never been stopped in his career, showing how dominant he has been. But all careers come to an end. Canelo has now outlined the age at which he will walk away.

“Since I was 28-29 years old I have felt in my best shape. I have always said that at 37 years of age it is a good age to enjoy what I have achieved with my family and in other facets of my career,” Canelo said
