Canelo Alvarez Is ‘Old’ – Says Oscar De La Hoya

Oscar De La Hoya has labelled Canelo Alvarez an ‘old’ fighter.

Canelo may be 33 years old, which is not the oldest for a boxer, but the Mexican has had a considerable number of fights.

Out of 63 fights, Canelo has racked up an impressive 59 wins and 37 KOs. And in the process of doing so, Canelo has become a four-division champion.

Although that may be the case, the Mexican has had some tough fights. Facing a prime Gennady Golovkin and Dmitry Bivol was testament to that.

Not only that, but Canelo has been professional since the age of 15. And that is something that De La Hoya mentioned amid claims that Canelo is on the decline.

“Canelo’s an old 33. Not because he’s been in wars but because he started professionally when he was 15,” De La Hoya

Those comments, however, are quite telling. Canelo’s recent three-fight deal with the PBC was criticised on the basis that the Mexican had not fought David Benavidez by choosing a 154-pounder in the form of Jermell Charlo.

Although there is still time for a potential clash with Benavidez, Alvarez’s choice of opponents may reflect that the fighter is entering towards the tail-end of his career.

And yet, the perception around Canelo has been that the undisputed champion is ducking the ‘Mexican Monster.’ And that is how Andre Ward saw it when he was asked about a Canelo-Benavidez bout.

“It’s a reason why Canelo hasn’t fought him. Nobody likes fighting a guy that has an output like that, especially when you’re a guy that doesn’t have a lot of output.

“Canelo is economical with his punches; he relies a lot on power, timing, and skill. He lets guy waste their energy, and then he’ll come on, and he believes his power and accuracy is going to bail him out, and it has for many, many fights.

So nobody really wants to fight a dude like Benavidez,” Ward said

Ultimately, Canelo is in a position to pick and choose the fights that he wants. And there is no getting away from that.
