Cain Velasquez Jailed For Five Years

Cain Velasquez, the former UFC Heavyweight Champion, has been jailed for five years.

The news arrives after Velasquez was arrested in 2022 on an attempted murder charge. Reports indicated that Velasquez was chasing Harry Goularte in his vehicle after the latter reportedly had sexually abused his son. It is believed that Goularte sexually abused Velasquez’s son when he was at a daycare that was owned by Harry’s mother. The former champion then fired his gun at Goularte’s car. The bullets made contact with Harry’s stepfather, Paul Bender. There were no critical injuries suffered.

Velasquez then entered the court system. He made the decision to agree to a plea deal. This was after suggestions Velasquez could have faced jail time for 20 years. The other charges included “shooting at a motor vehicle, assault with a firearm, assault with a deadly weapon, willfully discharging a firearm from a vehicle, and carrying a loaded firearm with intent to commit a felony.” The sentence has now been given, with Velasquez’s family suing Goularte via a civil lawsuit. The news has resulted in a strong reaction.

Velasquez’s Arrest

“What I did was not correct. I understand that. I paid and I’ll pay whatever else as far as what I have to do to pay all that back. [And] I don’t think I can pay that back. But I can always learn from my mistakes and help others. It’s just information that you never know anybody. Trust your kids. Have that open communication with your kids. “[But] the way that I handled things was not the way to do it. We cannot put the law in our own hands,” Velasquez said

“Today’s results are bittersweet — we had hoped Mr. Velasquez would remain out of jail. However, the facts remain clear: Cain Velasquez is a good man, a devoted father, and a respected member of the community. What he and his family have endured has been nothing short of a living nightmare-one they did not deserve. Throughout it all, Cain has shown courage and strength of character.

Further Reaction

“He has taken responsibility for his actions and has been held accountable. The sentence handed down today reflects the complexities of the situation and acknowledges the man behind the headlines. When he is released, he will continue to lead by example — protecting, contributing, and caring for the people around him.” Renee Hessling (Velasquez’s attorney) stated

“The defendant’s crime is severe. Justice demands a sentence that is equally severe. To hold the defendant accountable for his reckless and dangerous actions and the lasting physical and psychological injuries he left upon the victims and the community, the court should impose a sentence of 30 years to life in prison,” Aaron French (Deputy District Attorney) said

“One man’s decision to take the law into his own hands left an innocent man wounded and endangered schoolchildren, teachers, and many others in our community. If you want to do justice in Santa Clara County, please apply for a badge,” (Jeff Rosen) Santa Clara County district attorney said
