Broner Marks His Return With A Unanimous-Decision Win Over Hutchinson

Adrien Broner worked his way to a unanimous-decision win over Bill Hutchinson in a welterweight clash from the Miami Casino, Florida.

The four-division champion had been out of the ring since 2021 following his last fight against Jovanie Santiago, which is why his return under Don King left many unanswered questions.

From the off, it was clear that there was a gulf in class between Broner and Hutchinson.

Broner connected with a left hook and a right-hand combination to shake Hutchinson early doors, as the latter was pushed on the ropes with a sustained body attack.

Hutchinson remained spirited, but Broner’s jab and high guard meant that any attacks were either blocked or fell short.

However, there was a momentary period of success for Hutchinson in the third round as he connected with a series of right hands. Broner’s left hook was telling once again, though, as he dominated the first half of the fight.

Broner’s failure to stop Hutchinson was a sign of the ‘problem’ looking to gain some much-needed rounds due to his mass period of inactivity.

In the second half of the fight, Hutchinson had his best moments. A left hook and a right hand got Broner’s attention in the fifth, who responded by attempting to walk his opponent down.

While Broner slowed down a little, he began to pick up the pace in the championship rounds. Broner continued to inflict further damage, but Hutchinson managed to clinch and hold on until the final bell.

The judges scored the bout as follows: 100-90, 99-91 and 99-91.

Reaction

After the final bell, Broner was keen to put the rest of the super-lightweight division on notice. He called out WBA champion Roland Romero, as well as the winner of Josh Taylor and Teofimo Lopez for the WBO belt.

Broner’s return was timely for his career, but a huge fight with the top names in the division is still some way off.

“[I want] anybody with a title. Retardo [Rolly  Romero, the winner of Teofimo & Josh Taylor, and whoever. All the belts,” Broner

“He’s ready for anybody, no matter who it be. It was a great fight. He [Broner] hurt his hand, but nobody knows. It was a super fight, even with his hand being hurt.

“In the fifth round, he hurt his hand. He made the weight when nobody thought he’d make the weight, and then he won the fight. So he’s ready! Two years out, and everybody saw him around the world.

“He’s going to fight at 140, but in his first comeback fight, he gave himself a six-pound leverage,” King
