Bradley Labels Canelo-Charlo A ‘Mismatch,’ Charlo Responds And More

Tim Bradley has labeled Canelo Alvarez vs. Jermell Charlo as a ‘mismatch.’
The two undisputed champions will face off on September 30th, 2023, as Alvarez puts his undisputed super-middleweight titles on the line.
Meanwhile, Charlo will attempt to become undisputed in a second weight class. But given that Charlo will jump up two weight classes to fight above 154 for the first time in his career, there is a feeling that the weight will be a telling factor, as Canelo is seen as a heavy favorite.
And since Charlo has had tough fights at 154, as shown by his bout with Brian Castano where the latter did land on the American, Bradley has questioned the junior middleweight champion’s ability to take a shot at 168.
After all, Canelo has even fought at 175.
Bradley On Charlo
“That’s a mismatch. How will you go up two weight classes? You’ve [Jermell] been hurt by guys at 154, and you’re going to go up two weight classes? Do you think he’ll be able to take a punch from a bigger guy? Anybody that says, ‘Oh, he’s 6’0,” y’all tripping. You’re not just talking about height. No, we’re talking about boxing. That’s what we’re talking about. It’s different. “We’re talking about boxing. He’s [Canelo] fought at 175. Understand that. Canelo Alvarez fought at 175 against big huge dudes. It was Kovalev. He’s a freaking monster,” Bradley
Much in the same way, Tony Harrison has questioned Charlo’s decision to take the fight. Although it will no doubt be a lucrative event, fighters who have jumped up multiple divisions have never looked the same once they move back down.
Roy Jones Jr. proved that following his win over John Ruiz as he did move up from light heavyweight to go to heavyweight, but he was never the same since then.
In addition, Kell Brook’s decision to face Gennady Golovkin backfired, as the welterweight never reached the heights that once made him the IBF welterweight champion.
As such, Harrison was not keen on the fight.
Harrison On Charlo
“I think that was stupid to move up to that weight class. I wouldn’t even be comfortable him [Jermell] meeting him at 160. No matter why he did it, there’s a reason why he did it, right? He had to do it for a reason, and that’s why he chose this fight. I’m rooting for that,” Harrison
Despite this being the case, Charlo is keen to prove his doubters wrong. The champion at 154 has already seen Terence Crawford make history by beating Errol Spence Jr. to become undisputed in two weight divisions.
While he did beat his stablemate in achieving that, Bud’s performance showed that it was possible to beat the doubters.
And given that Charlo is the underdog heading into this fight, the American is using that as motivation to pull off the unthinkable.
Charlo Reacts
“I don’t need to convince anybody. I feel like I’m always going to be questioned or under-dogged, or whatever it is, and I’m fine with that. That makes me fight harder, that inspires me, or motivates me to push myself in a ring and take any chances that I got to take,” Charlo
Bomac On Spence
Meanwhile, Brian McIntyre (Bomac) expected more from Errol Spence Jr. following Terence Crawford’s win.
Bud stopped Spence in the ninth round to become the undisputed welterweight champion of the world. This made Crawford the first one to do it in the four belt era, as he became undisputed in two weight classes.
And in the process of doing so, Crawford dropped ‘The Truth’ three times in order to complete a comprehensive victory.
The ease of Bud’s victory was a shock since he bullied the bigger man in the form of Spence. Therefore, there have been question marks over whether or not there should be a rematch moving forward.
And for Bomac, he was surprised to see how things played out in that he expected more from Spence.
“I thought it was going to be a little more competitive. The way Bud prepared himself, the way his team got him together, that’s what made it easy for him,” Bomac
Moving forward, Spence and Charlo both have a lot to prove. But one thing they have shown in their careers is that they do have championship pedigree.
And if they can rediscover that form, then there is no doubt that they can bounce back. After all, in boxing, you are only as good as your last fight. Time will tell how it all plays out moving forward.
