Boxing's Donald Curry Diagnosed With A Brain Disease

Boxing great Donald Curry has been diagnosed with Traumatic Encephalopathy Syndrome.

The 63-year-old left his mark on the sport by becoming a champion at welterweight and junior middleweight. Curry won the WBA Welterweight Title from 1983-86. He followed it up with undisputed at welterweight and won the WBC belt at 154. He was once dubbed the next Sugar Ray Leonard. However, he has been suffering from mental health problems, which raised concerns over his health. Now, the Traumatic Encephalopathy Syndrome diagnosis is another setback. This is a brain disorder that can occur because of repeated injuries to the head. It is a type of CTE which can get progressively worse as time passes by.

The issue raises the question of aftercare for boxers. The sport has been criticised for not doing enough for boxers to ensure their mental and physical health is looked after once they retire. The lack of a pension fund is something that has been discussed. The Global Fight League, an MMA organization, has recently been praised after suggestions they will put a pension fund in place. There are also claims there could be health insurance for fighters.

Boxers’ Welfare

Mexican boxer Israel Vazquez was recently diagnosed with cancer, resulting in a passionate plea from Oscar De La Hoya. The Golden Boy promoter urged the boxing community to join and donate to the boxer’s GoFundMe campaign. Without such support, the three-time super bantamweight world champion would be left to deal with the medical costs by himself. This is a major issue since many boxers do not earn enough to sustain themselves once they retire.

“I wanted to call out all the entire boxing community to support our fellow brother Israel Vazquez. He has terminal cancer and needs our help. His entire family started a GoFundMe a week ago, and they’ve managed to raise almost $25,000 of his $75,000 goal. Are you telling me there aren’t 50 of us in boxing who could give a few $1,000 each really, come on now,” De La Hoya stated

Curry’s son, Donovan, has spoken out about his father’s deteriorating health.

Curray’s Son

“I’m reaching out to the boxing community to ask for assistance in finding a long-term healthcare facility for my dad. For some time, he was being cared for at an incredible church facility in Fort Worth, thanks to the support of his former trainer, Paul Reyes, who recently passed away. However, due to incidents of fighting and breaking rules, my dad had to leave. He is currently staying at a hotel in Fort Worth.

“This condition has caused impairments in judgment, reasoning, memory, and behaviour, including poor impulse control. He is currently staying in a hotel in Fort Worth. We are searching for a facility that specializes in patients with conditions like my dad’s, ideally one that operates at no cost. If you know of any resources, facilities, or organizations that could help, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Thank you for your time and support during this challenging time,” Donovan said
