Boxing World Mourns Tragic Loss of Arturo Gatti's Son

Boxing fans are in shock following the tragic death of Arturo Gatti Jr., the teenage son of Hall of Fame fighter Arturo Gatti.

The 17-year-old promising boxer was reportedly found dead in an apartment in Mexico, where he had been living with his mother, Amanda Rodrigues, in circumstances that immediately triggered painful memories of his father’s passing 16 years prior. Arturo Sr. was found dead in a Brazilian condo. They eventually ruled Gatti Sr.’s death a suicide and released Amanda Rodrigues, who was first suspected.

Arturo Jr. was determined to continue the fighting legacy of the Gatti name. The teenager was deeply committed to the sport, having trained seriously since the age of six. His longtime amateur coach, Moe Latif, was allegedly even scheduled to fly to Mexico this week to continue their preparations. Tragically, all those plans for a professional career are now shattered.

Reaction

“It’s with a heavy heart that I have to say,…R.I.P. to 17-year-old Arturo Gatti Jr.,” Chuck Zito (Gatti Sr.’s ex-bodyguard)

“It is unfortunately not a rumor or a joke. Arturo is gone,” Latif

“The World Boxing Council and the global community of our sport join in prayer for the profound loss of Arturo Gatti Jr. at the age of 17. May God rest his soul and help his family find peace,” WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman
