Boxing Pros Praise Devin Haney's Outstanding Victory Against Regis Prograis

Devin Haney’s dominant win over Regis Prograis showed that there are levels in boxing.

Prior to the fight, Haney promised to put on a performance in his hometown. The boxer was making his first appearance in the Bay Area since he became a professional boxer in 2015. The Dream handled the pressure with aplomb as he won every single round on his way to a unanimous decision win. The win made him a two-weight world champion after having become undisputed at 135. The victory puts Haney in serious contention for ‘Fighter of the Year.’

Haney’s Skills

The performance showed many new dimensions to Haney’s game. On the odd occasion that Regis did land, the boxer showed that he was capable of taking a shot. Prograis had 24 knockouts in his 29 wins, making him the biggest puncher at 140.

In addition, the five pound extra weight made a huge difference as Haney’s right hand troubled Regis on more than one occasion. The ‘Dream dropped Regis in round three with a straight right hand. That was followed up with another right hand in the sixth which put Regis on the back foot.

“A tremendous difference [on the extra weight]. You see it in my performance. I felt so much stronger …140 got a new king,” Haney stated

Prograis Reacts

“That m***er****** good, I’m not gonna lie, he’s better than what I thought. I’m gonna give him credit. We still keep the same energy. I say what I mean, but I’m gonna tell the truth, Devin Haney is better than I thought, he is. His feet are faster, he’s quicker than I thought he was. I couldn’t seem to get to him. That’s all. He was quick. His power did surprise me. He does have power. It’s not a one-punch type of shot, but he’s quick. It’s the shot you don’t see. That’s the kind of power he has,” Prograis said

Haney out-landed his opponent in every single round, while Prograis landed just 36 punches in the whole fight. And five of those punches consisted of jabs. That became the lowest number of punches ever landed in a 12-round fight, according to CompuBox.

The performance earned Haney a lot of respect from his boxing contemporaries. Shakur Stevenson and Ryan Garcia put aside their differences to praise the performance. It is not clear if those boxers will still target Haney following the impressive performance, but either way, the praise was all for Haney.
