Bomac Wants Canelo Vs. Crawford, Alvarez Questions Bud’s CV And More

Brian McIntyre, Terence Crawford’s trainer, is open to the idea of his fighter facing Canelo Alvarez at 168 pounds.

Such a move would depend on both fighters getting past their next opponents. Canelo will face Jermell Charlo on September 30th, 2023, as he defends his super middleweight titles.

Meanwhile, Crawford will face Errol Spence Jr. after the latter decided to enact his rematch clause. Although a date has not been set, it will most likely occur at 154 pounds as Bud moves up.

And provided that both fighters come through, as they are expected to do, Bomac was keen for Crawford to take on the ultimate challenge.

Bomac On Crawford

“Like I said, I’m up for a challenge, and Terence definitely is because of the fact that he announced it. He told the world what he wanted to do,” BoMac

In reality, it is a no-lose situation given that Bud is not expected to win. But if he did manage to pull off the unthinkable, Bud would go down as an all-time great.

But whether Canelo would take the fight is another matter. There are calls on the Mexican to face David Benavidez, who has been the WBC mandatory for over a year.

And the longer that fight does not happen, the more there will be calls on Canelo to make it happen even if he does face Crawford. But for now, a Canelo-Crawford bout could become a reality.

Canelo On Crawford

“Look, I respect Crawford, he’s a great fighter.Sometimes it’s a little crazy – people are talking about how I’m gonna face a ‘small fighter’ like Charlo, but he’s big. Now everybody’s talking about if I’m gonna face Crawford who fights at 147lbs, who is smaller than Charlo.

“At the end of the day, I don’t wanna have credit to face Crawford, but you never know in boxing. It’s possible, why not? It’s possible. If it makes sense, I’m down to do it. I don’t care who is there, I’m always able to fight anybody,” Canelo

Alvarez On Bud’s Resume

Meanwhile, Canelo Alvarez has downplayed Terence Crawford’s achievements by questioning the opposition that he has faced amid links that he could fight him.

Bud stopped Errol Spence Jr. in the ninth round to become the first undisputed welterweight champion of the four belt era. And in the process of doing so, Bud also became undisputed in a second weight class following his achievements at 140.

Although that may have been the case, Canelo downplayed those achievements by questioning if his resume is as great as it claims to be.

“No, look, like I always said, I respect Terence Crawford. He’s a very talented fighter but he just won one big fight. If you see his record, he just beat one good fighter in Errol Spence. Other than that, I don’t think he’s beaten other great fighters like Spence,” Canelo

In response, Crawford hit back with the following: “Here we go with the I haven’t fought nobody but Spence talk. Lol y’all so delusional it’s crazy,” Crawford

Bud Answers Doubters

Nevertheless, Canelo would have to back up those words. After all, those were the same sentiments that were said by Spence’s team before they fought Bud.

Spence questioned if Crawford’s skills could translate against a proper welterweight, despite the fact that Bud did stop all of his opponents at 147 before facing Spence.

“I’m not gonna lie – Top Rank got the best matchmakers in the business. You ain’t fought nobody, man. You haven’t beat anybody. Undisputed at 140. Who you fought at 135? And who you fought at 147? Even [when] you fought Shawn Porter, even Shawn Porter said he did not train like he should. He didn’t do the things that his daddy told him to do,” Spence

Meanwhile, Canelo’s biggest wins could arguably have question marks too. The first two fights with GGG were contentious with many feeling Alvarez lost the first. As for the second bout, there were also suggestions that it could have been a draw.

And given that Crawford is open to facing Canelo at 168, the pressure would be on the Mexican to come out on top. And that could end up working against him if Crawford did pull off a masterful performance.

Time will tell how it all plays out moving forward. You can stay up-to-date with the latest happenings in the world of boxing and MMA by visiting boxingblitz right here.
