Bomac Released On A Suspended Sentence After Being In Possession Of A Firearm
November 15, 2023
1 year

In today’s latest boxing news, Brian McIntyre, Terence Crawford’s trainer, has been released from custody after being detained by the British authorities for having a firearm in his possession at Manchester airport.
According to reports, the trainer was apprehended following his way back to the US after Chris Eubank Jr.’s win over Liam Smith.
Bomac’s Troubles
“McIntyre spent the past five weeks in jail. He pledged guilty after a loaded gun and ammunition was discovered in his suitcase when he was set to travel back to the U.S. last month. He was in Manchester for Chris Eubank Jr.’s rematch with Liam Smith, which Eubank won via 10th-round TKO,” Mike Coppinger said
Prior to the incident, the trainer had managed to guide Terence Crawford to an undisputed welterweight title as he stopped Errol Spence Jr. to become the first man to have achieved the feat in the four-belt era.
Thereafter, Bomac was apprehend on the following charges: ‘Possession of a firearm, possession of ammunition for a firearm without a certificate.’
As a result, the trainer was required to remain in custody until October 10th, 2023, pending a court date. At the subsequent hearing, McIntyre pleaded guilty, the result of which was a 20-month suspended sentence.
The punishment could have been a lot more stringent, given that the offence did carry a potential five-year prison sentence.
However, if the trainer is apprehended with a gun in the UK within the next 20 months, that is likely to be enough to get Bomac in trouble with the authorities. But the ruling has now allowed Bomac to return back to the United States and focus on the task of preparing his fighters.
The decision had been impacted by the presence of mitigating circumstances, as well as a show of support from Crawford. The boxer had been on hand as a character witness in court to aid his trainer’s release.

Reaction
“You were sufficiently careless to carry into this country a firearm, a prohibited weapon. You did not know you had done so but when you were leaving this jurisdiction through Manchester Airport that firearm was detected. You didn’t know it was there when you were in this country. You didn’t use it in any way. You are a man of effective good character, You are testament to the redemptive power of boxing as a discipline. That power is a bit of a cliché but nevertheless manifestly a truth. More that your works are significant power for the good of your community. You are, in short, a good man. A thoroughly good man. You are a power of good for your community and this world. This is manifestly and obviously a case where it is appropriate to suspend the sentence,” Judge Dean said
