Board Defends Fining Eubank Jr. For Egging Benn – ‘It’s Serious’

Robert Smith, the head of the British Boxing Board of Control, justified his decision to fine Chris Eubank Jr. for egging Conor Benn.
Eubank was given a $129,000 fine after egging Benn during their kickoff presser. Eubank made the decision to egg Benn after seeing their initial fight being called off after the latter failed VADA tests for Clomiphene. The WBC initially suggested that Benn may have failed the tests due to Benn eating too many eggs. Benn did not help himself, as he failed to provide the public with a reason as to how Clomiphene entered into his system.
Eubank Vs. Benn
Benn is now allowed to box, but Eubank has not been pleased by his conduct, saying he deserved what was given to him. Eubank’s conduct received a mixed reaction, with some feeling that there had been no long-term damage done. Meanwhile, others hit out at the incident, stating that it could have been much more dangerous. Eubank has received the fine but has said he would do it again if he had the opportunity. Smith felt that the board acted in the best interest of the sport.
“Following a hearing before the Stewards of the British Boxing Board of Control, Chris Eubank Jr. was found to be in breach of Regulation 25 (misconduct) for his conduct at the press conference in Manchester for the Chris Eubank Jr v Conor Benn contest on 26th April 2025. As such, the Stewards of the Board fined Chris Eubank Jr the sum of £100,000,” BBBoC
“Did I go too far?” he asked. I believe there have been a lot of lines crossed in this whole affair. I consider it mild to throw an egg at someone who made the absurd allegation that it was the reason he failed his drug tests. I would do it again if I had the chance because he deserved the humiliation. Regretfully, I have nothing to offer today. I was searched several times and was unable to smuggle any in,” Eubank stated
Smith Reacts
“I believe the fine was about right, it’s a very serious matter. There’s ramifications for the whole show, not just their fight but every fight. If anybody else gets injured. But forget the egg bit, if that happened on the street, Eubank Jr could go in for assault. Ultimately it is means tested. The money goes to the board’s charity. It’s in the board rules, boxers and boxing license holders should know it goes to a charity. We look after boxers who have come over a hard time, and it goes towards medical research and seminars,” Robert Smith said
It is also important to remember that the British Boxing Board of Control appears to be taking a more hard-line approach to such conduct. Jarrell Miller has also had a portion of his purse withheld by the board after he slapped Fabio Wardley during their kick-off presser. Miller has shown in his prior conduct that he does have lots of controversy, having previously failed tests ahead of his upcoming Anthony Joshua fight, which was then called off. Smith’s comments have resulted in a mixed reaction, with some feeling that the board had overstepped their mark, whilst others felt it was justified.
