Bill Haney: Devin's 'Right Hand Over The Top Stops Garcia

Bill Haney, Devin Haney’s father, is confident his son will stop Ryan Garcia as he hit out at the latter’s recent behaviour.

Devin defends his WBC Junior Welterweight Title on April 20. The fight has been under much scrutiny, with suggestions that it could be called off due to Garcia’s antics. Ryan has been accused of having mental health problems due to his behaviour in the build-up.

So far, he has admitted to being ‘high,’ as well as drinking and smoking weed. The boxer has also posted on numerous topics. This has ranged from human trafficking to attacking the PRIME energy drink for allegedly harming people. In addition, Ryan has broken down on social media, raising suggestions that he should not box.

“If you’re a commission and you do not force him to see qualified psychiatric people to be evaluated … shut the commission down. Why are the taxpayers paying for that commission if they’re going to behave like this in a case like this? There’s no sense in having a commission with all the stuff that’s out that we’ve seen. That scares us. It’s scary,” Teddy Atlas said

While that may have been the case, Bill accused Ryan of playing on the concept of mental health to throw them off their own preparations. He responded by saying Devin was working even harder.

Bill Haney Reacts

“We feel it’s a ploy on Garcia’s team to get us off of our game. So, we dug down even deeper. I don’t think the Commission is going to pull the fight, not with the way he’s [Ryan] working. I know he’s acting, and it’s unfortunate that he’s using the mental health route as an antic because there are people in the world who are suffering from mental illness. That’s not deterring us,” Bill said

Garcia has been posting clips of his sparring and training, showing that he is hitting the gym. The narrative entering the fight is that Garcia’s best hope of winning is a knockout. He is seen as the less technically skilled fighter, relying more on his knockout power. His last bout was an eighth-round knockout of Oscar Duarte.

Haney’s Power

But there are worries that Garcia’s defensive flaws will be exposed. This was shown in his performance against Gervonta Davis. Despite starting the fight well, he left himself wide open. He was dropped in the second round, then later stopped in the seventh with a body shot. Although Haney has not stopped anyone since 2019, Bill was confident about his son getting the stoppage.

“Devin is on another level with his preparation and his skillset. The power is there. He’s always had the power to keep his opponents honest. Devin can stop anyone in or around the division. He’s a pure master boxer, so he’s aware of his surroundings in the ring at all times. Can he put Ryan to sleep? Absolutely. Right hand over the top,” Bill stated
