Bill Haney Claims Tank and Devin Can Fully Expose Shakur Stevenson
Shakur Stevenson’s boxing skills would be exposed by Devin Haney and Gervonta Davis.
That is according to Bill Haney. Stevenson’s standing as a boxer has reduced following his recent performance against Edwin De Los Santos. Despite Stevenson winning the WBC lightweight title to become a three-division champion, the manner of the performance alienated the boxing community. Shakur was booed during the course of the fight, given that he was fighting on the back foot with his jab. And given that Stevenson had been marketing himself as a fighter who had been avoided, Bill Haney felt that his skills would be found wanting at the highest level.
Haney On Shakur
“There might be two guys on the planet that will expose Shakur all the way. That’s Tank and Devin. Tank based on his explosiveness and Devin based on, he got two hands and two feet,” Haney said
At the same time, Stevenson’s standing amongst his boxing peers also appears to have fallen. Fellow boxer Richardson Hitchins was adamant that Davis would not respect Stevenson in the ring if they ever fought, given his defensive style that would allow Davis to continue to come forward. And given the lack of huge power coming back since Stevenson has ten stoppages in 21 fights, that would not be enough for Davis to be on his guard.
“I feel like after his [Shakur Stevenson] last performance, Tank will probably have less respect. ‘If this [person] had you looking like that, imagine what I would do. If I was Tank, that would be my mindset. ‘Oh, I’m going to kill you.’ I’d be licking my chops watching that fight, because ‘you really didn’t want to engage.
“You didn’t want do anything with this guy [De Los Santos], and this guy isn’t on my level. So imagine you getting in there with me, Tank Davis. He’s [Shakur] going to have bigger fights before he gets to the Tank fight. He’ll be like, ‘I told y’all that night I wasn’t feeling good,’ then it probably won’t play into his head. We don’t know. We just have to see,” Hitchins stated
Stevenson’s Next Steps
This naturally begs the question: What can Stevenson do moving forward? Well, the boxer may have to change his style in order to become more appealing on the eye. But in opening up more, there is a risk that Stevenson will suffer against the power hitters.
In addition, Stevenson’s leverage in the fight negotiations will also suffer since he cannot command the same numbers that he may have otherwise wanted. In addition, Stevenson has to change the way that he markets himself to become more marketable.
Despite being labelled as someone who is not fighting the biggest names, Davis is a cash cow in the sport. In his last fight against Ryan Garcia, the boxer helped produce the highest rate of 2023. And in doing so, Davis walked away with the highest purse of his career. And there is no getting away from that.
