Bill Haney Claims Ryan Garcia Is Dodging Devin

Bill Haney has accused Ryan Garcia of doing everything he can to avoid a rematch with his son Devin Haney.

The two boxers faced off last April in a highly controversial contest. Garcia defied the odds to drop Haney three times and secure a shock majority decision victory. But the result was short-lived after Garcia later failed VADA tests for Ostarine. The authorities responded by turning it into a no-contest and giving Garcia a year ban. Garcia will be allowed to box professionally in April 2025. But there are doubts about whether a rematch will happen. The two fighters have given contrasting views on that.

Garcia has said he does not want to speak about a rematch until Haney drops his lawsuit against him. Haney responded to the no-contest by suing Garcia for breach of contract, battery and unjust enrichment. Ryan has also said he does not want to undergo VADA testing and prefers to use other organizations. Garcia was adamant that he had not taken any PEDs, whilst his camp also stated that there was not enough in his system to enhance performance. Ryan also talked about the possibility of fighting Teofimo Lopez instead.

The Rematch

The Lopez fight is arguably better for his legacy since The Takeover has the WBO Junior Welterweight Title. Haney’s camp wants any rematch to be based on VADA testing, and they have now accused Ryan of ducking the rematch. The rematch is arguably bigger for Haney than Garcia. Garcia’s commercial value is still big since his social media following increased exponentially following the failed tests. Haney, meanwhile, has seen his brand suffer damage. He vacated his WBC Junior Welterweight Title after only Top Rank made a purse bid for his mandatory fight against Sandor Martin.

Haney has also not boxed since that defeat, which has taken him nearly a year out of the ring. Whilst he has agreed on a deal to face an opponent in March, likely Adrien Broner, he has shown that his popularity has declined. There has been a perception that he has been obsessing over the Garcia rematch and not moving on with his career. He is already a two-weight world champion and undefeated.

Garcia Reacts

He has achieved more than what Garcia has done, and yet he is not able to crossover like Garcia, who is seen as the bigger commercial star. But if the terms are right, they could make a rematch, which is arguably going to be much bigger. However, that all depends on whether an agreement can be reached with Ryan. There is nothing to indicate that this is close.

“I would be down to do a rematch, but a lot of things need to play out the way I need them to play out. So, first and foremost, he needs to drop that lawsuit if he wants to have a conversation about it. To me, I thought that was a weak move by him, and now he wants to backtrack and say that’s how he’s going to get it back.

“Before, he was saying different. I’m ready to fight him. I already fought him and beat him. I’ll put my own predicament on it. We won’t be using VADA. We’ll be using the people I want to use because, for some reason, Bill Haney keeps saying VADA. It’s kind of strange to me. Why can’t I use USADA or some other organization?,” Garcia said
