Berlanga Wants The Canelo Rematch – ‘Line Them Up’

Edgar Berlanga wants to rematch Canelo Alvarez as he outlines the ideal fights he wants to make.

Berlanga suffered the first loss of his career against Canelo in his last fight in a unanimous decision. He got off the canvas to rally to the final bell during Mexican Independence Weekend. He praised Canelo for the win, stating that the Mexican was his idol.

“I was telling him that he’s my idol. Since I was a kid I looked up to him.” It was the fifth straight points victory for Alvarez, whose last win inside the distance was an 11th-round knockout of Caleb Plant in November 2021,” Berlanga said

The Puerto Rican was also spotted in Mexico celebrating after the win. Oscar De La Hoya ripped Berlanga for doing so, especially since he had shown nothing in the fight to suggest that he could come out victorious. Berlanga simply managed to show a lot of heart and stay in the fight.

But in truth, he never looked like he was ever going to trouble Canelo. The fight produced some impressive numbers. It sold 650,000 PPVs. The live gate was also confirmed as $17 million. It secured Berlanga the most money in his career. Reports indicate that Berlanga will fight next in March. He recently called out Diego Pacheco following the latter’s victory over Steven Nelson, which took his record to 23-0.

Other Options

“That’s a fight that I’ve been open to making for a long time now. And, you know, it’s funny because my coach [Jose Benavidez Sr.] told me, he’s like, ‘If you don’t get the knockout [against Nelson], all these guys are gonna be ready to fight you. You know, these guys are gonna be open to fighting you if you don’t get the knockout.’ So, it’s funny he said that, because now it’s happening. And Edgar Berlanga, if you’re hearing this, bro, we can run it next, whenever. Let’s get it,” Pacheco stated

Berlanga’s next opponent has not been confirmed. But Berlanga has already outlined some names. Canelo is one of them, whilst others who were mentioned include Caleb Plant and Jermall Charlo. Getting the Canelo rematch will not be easy. Canelo is reportedly being linked with a fight against the IBF Super Middleweight Champion William Scull next. A victory over Scull makes Canelo undisputed at 168 pounds again.

There are also reports that he will face off against Terence Crawford in September. That is arguably the biggest fight to be made outside of the David Benavidez bout. Canelo has said he wants to retire, perhaps at 38 years old. That leaves Alvarez with four years in the sport. The Mexican will likely target bouts which generate the most amount of money. There is nothing to indicate that Berlanga deserved a rematch, given how the first fight played out. But he did produce some solid numbers, meaning that Canelo may consider it if the terms are right.
