Berlanga Wants A Canelo Rematch

Edgar Berlanga is desperate to rematch Canelo Alvarez following his defeat against the Mexican.

Berlanga lost a one-sided unanimous decision, suffering the first loss of his career. He failed to live up to his pre-fight talk that he would stop Canelo. Berlanga was dropped in the third round as Canelo negated his reach advantage. While Berlanga was being dominated, he still made it to the final bell as he embraced Canelo. The two fighters paid their respects to each other as Berlanga now targets running things back.

Berlanga On Canelo

“I know I won the world after this performance. We gave the fight the fans wanted to see a war. I’m ready for whoever in the 168-lb division. I was trying to get him tired kind of like the rope a dope thing. I showed the world that I’m ready for the big leagues. I’m ready to stamp my name in the sport of boxing and become a legend, and take over. We went the distance, and we fought a hell of a fight,” Berlanga  said

Nevertheless, boxing fans were not impressed. Berlanga had shown nothing to indicate that a rematch would be any different. Jaime Munguia troubled Canelo more and showed he was willing to take risks by engaging. That ultimately saw him getting dropped.

However, when it came to Berlanga, he was sent to the canvas when he was going on the back foot. There are also other fights for Berlanga in the division. He has been in a verbal war with Caleb Plant, who has just secured a victory against Trevor McCumby. Plant had to get off the canvas before stopping his man.

Berlanga’s Future

A fight with Plant gives Berlanga more experience against a former IBF Super Middleweight Champion. There is also a possible fight with Munguia. Munguia has been in the ring with Canelo and will box against Erik Bazinyan this month. The two could then face off, with the winner taking a step closer to a Canelo rematch.

But in reality, Canelo has bigger aims. Terence Crawford called him out after the Berlanga win. Meanwhile, Alvarez said he is willing to rematch Dmitry Bivol after they lost their first clash. There is also the David Benavidez fight if there is enough money on the table after Canelo demanded $200 million to make that fight. But Eddie Hearn praised Berlanga, saying he is the best in the 168-pound division outside of Canelo.

“Even when he got dropped, he came back, was firing back, and the people loved it. His ring IQ, we knew was better than people anticipated, was good and frustrated Canelo Alvarez at times. As I told him earlier. He’s secured his entire life [with millions] and his family’s life forever at such a young age, and it’s just the beginning because right now, you have to say he’s the #1 name in the division outside of Canelo Alvarez, and there are huge fights out there for him,” Hearn stated
