Berlanga Tells Canelo: ‘I Will Break Your Face’
Edgar Berlanga is talking up a big game, saying he will break Canelo Alvarez’s face.
Berlanga faces the biggest test of his career when he takes on Canelo on Mexican Independence Weekend on September 14. Berlanga has the chance to win Alvarez’s WBC, WBA and WBO belts, making him a PPV star. He is 22-0, with 17 knockouts as he enters the bout full of confidence.
During their second kick-off presser, Berlanga rose from his seat as he accosted Canelo. Berlanga was not impressed after Canelo cut him off during his comments and refused to stop. Now that the dust has settled down somewhat, Berlanga has had plenty to say about Canelo.
Berlanga On Canelo
“Money don’t make you. He talks about all his bread. It’s about your heart and how you treat others. A lot of the Mexicans in Mexico don’t like him. He’s an arrogant dude. He’s a diva. I told him, ‘I’m going to break every bone in your face.’ It’s not capping,” Berlanga said
The pressure is on Canelo to produce, given the criticism over his choice of opponents. His failure to box David Benavidez has angered the fanbase, as the Mexican Monster has now moved up to 175 pounds. The Terence Crawford fight is also off the table after the Saudis moved on.
This was after Alvarez claimed he was unhappy with how the Saudis conducted business, preferring to work on his terms. Turki Alalshikh accused Canelo of taking easier fights for the most amount of money as their relations soured. Berlanga does not see the fight as simple, as he is ready to cause an upset.
“If we win this, we’re talking about generational wealth money. It’s superstar status, for real. It’s private jets for the rest of my life. [And] it’s everything I ever wanted as a kid, it’s going to be laid out. Sponsorships and endorsements, and acting. Everything is going to be opened up for me,” Berlanga stated
Berlanga On Plant
Another fight Berlanga has been linked with is Caleb Plant. Plant was in attendance at their kick-off presser. Berlagna pointed to the crowd during the fight and mocked Plant’s performance against Canelo. Plant was stopped late. Canelo reacted to the incident, telling Plant that he would beat Berlanga for him.
But Berlanga and Plant’s feud has been there for some time. They were involved in an altercation at Canelo’s weigh-in for the Jaimie Munguia fight. Berlanga was not afraid of the altercation as he had a few words to say about Plant.
“He knows the vibes. I’m Puerto Rican. I come from the hood. He’s on his way out. He’s a nobody. He needs people like us to sell tickets because he can’t sell a family dinner. That’s why he’s on our undercard. “I had to show out in my last fight [Padraig McCrory] to be in this position. Eddie Hearn put me in a position with the WBA to be the mandatory. We went from there, and we got the shot. The sky is the limit now,” Berlanga added
