Benn Plans His Comeback, Wants Spence Or Crawford, Eubank Praises Smith

Conor Benn has revealed that he plans to make his return to boxing this month.

The boxer has not been in the ring since he failed two VADA tests for Clomiphene. Although Benn has maintained that he is innocent, the star has failed to establish that with the authorities so far.

Despite having his suspension uplifted, UKAD and the British Boxing Board of Control have decided to appeal the decision. Therefore, Benn must go through a hearing to find out where he stands.

As such, there is still a possibility that he could be banned, especially if strict liability applies. And yet, Benn already has his eyes set on a fight since he can box unless the appeal establishes otherwise.

Benn On His Comeback

“September 23, that’s the plan. Listen, we offered Redkach the fight. If Redkach wants to fight, let’s fight, no problem. Smith made him look good. What, it takes you ten rounds to dispatch of someone who’s got a broken leg? I’m not really impressed,” Benn

But if the fight with Redkach does not go ahead, then Benn is willing to face another big name. He expanded on how he would be open to fighting the winner of Terence Crawford and Errol Spence Jr.

Bud stopped Spence in the ninth round to become the first undisputed welterweight champion of the four-belt era. Thereafter, there were talks over a rematch which has now been agreed.

Crawford will be the favorite once again, given the ease with which he beat Spence. But once the winner is established, Benn was keen to face him.

Benn On Crawford-Spence

“For me, I wouldn’t have activated the rematch clause if I was Spence. I don’t know why he’s activated it. You know, it was quite one-sided to me. But I’ll happily fight the winner of them. Or you’ve got these top-five fighters coming through…..any of them. All the top welterweights are over there (in US) – I’ll happily go over there to the states and do the job. I’ll go to the states and handle business. I’m the best 147 fighter in the country, no doubt, and the most entertaining for sure,” Benn

And yet, the reality of Benn getting such a fight is very slim. The boxer has not won a belt of significant note to demand such a fight.

Meanwhile, even at a domestic level, Benn has not had a major fight to stake a claim for such a fight. And to top it all off, there is a moral argument that could come into play in that fighters may not take the fight until his appeal process is fully done. And there is no getting away from that.

Eubank On Quitting

As for Benn’s foe, Chris Eubank Jr. has praised Liam Smith for the manner of his defeat.

Eubank defeated Smith by stopping him in round ten in a performance that showed a radical improvement from the first fight. Although Smith did appear to injure his ankle, the Liverpudlian refused to be drawn into any excuses.

After all, Smith had suffered a defeat where he was knocked down twice in front of a huge crowd. But Eubank took the opportunity to praise Smith and point out how other fighters are looking to find a way out of adversity by quitting.

“He didn’t look for a way out like so many other fighters are doing these days. People are getting hurt, people are getting cut or dropped, and then they’re looking for the towel…..their team’s looking for the towel, or they’re looking to just take a knee and [say], ‘listen, I don’t want any more.’ That guy tonight [Dave Allen against Frazer Clarke], he just quit. And it’s becoming normal now, which is not good. So, when fighters like me and Liam get in the ring and we have no quit in us, that’s what boxing needs,” Eubank

Those accusations were also made against Daniel Dubois in his loss to Oleksandr Usyk. Despite putting the Ukrainian down in round five, which was later declared a low blow, Dubois failed to capitalise on the momentum.

Therefore, he ended up getting stopped in the ninth round. As such, the chance to become the united heavyweight champion disappeared. And with that, it was the second time Dubois appeared to quit given he had taken a knee against Joe Joyce.

So Eubank’s’comments may have hit a nerve. You can stay up-to-date with the latest happenings in the world of boxing and MMA by visiting boxingblitz right here.
