Benavidez Sr. Wants Charlo To Beat Canelo
David Benavidez’s father, Jose Benavidez Sr. is desperate to see Jermell Charlo come out on top against Canelo Alvarez.
The two fighters square off on September 30th, 2023, as Canelo defends his undisputed super middleweight titles.
A win for Charlo would create history, as the American would become undisputed in a second weight class like Terence Crawford.
Meanwhile, a win for Canelo would increase the call on him to face David Benavidez. But rather than see his fellow Mexican win, Benavidez Sr. was rooting for Charlo.
Benavidez Sr. On Charlo
“I’m wishing & I’m hoping that [Jermell] Charlo will win. That’s a better fight that might happen. I think that fight is more realistic to be done,” Benavidez Sr.
Those comments are understandable given that Canelo has been accused of ducking the ‘Mexican Monster.’ The latter has been the WBC interim champion, who has beaten Caleb Plant much like Canelo.
And yet, he cannot seem to secure the Alvarez fight. And given that his father has backed his son to win in that match-up, the reluctance to see Canelo win was based more on Alvarez’s refusal to take big fights unlike Charlo.
Benavidez Sr. On Canelo
“I don’t see that fight happening with David. That fight is not going to happen. Canelo said that a lot of people are saying that his career is inclining. The man has done so much and put in a lot of hard work in the gym, and that’s when people get worn out in training camps. I think that David is too young for him, too strong for him, and he knows that, and he doesn’t want to lose to him. That’s why he doesn’t want to give him the opportunity. I don’t think that fight is going to happen, and he’s right about that. So, we got to continue fighting all these other guys,” Benavidez Sr.
However, even if Charlo were to win, the chances of the ‘Mexican Monster’ facing him are slim. A rematch would most likely take place, leaving the idea of a bout with Benavidez unlikely.
