Benavidez Outlines His Plan To Fight Canelo

In some recent boxing news, David Benavidez has outlined his plans on facing Canelo Alvarez in 2024.

Benavidez is the current WBC interim champion, which has put him in line to face Alvarez for all the belts. Although that may be the case, both fighters have other pressing matters.

Canelo faces Jermell Charlo on September 30th, 2023, as he defends all his belts at super middleweight for the third time. As for Benavidez, reports indicate that a fight is close to being finalized for November against Demetrius Andrade.

And provided that both fighters come through those bouts, then the calls for a Canelo-Benavidez fight will only grow. After all, with both fighters connected to PBC, the chances of a fight happening are high.

Nevertheless, reports also stress that Canelo could face Jermall Charlo after Jermell. Jermall has been out of the ring since 2021, as he has battled mental health struggles.

But prior to Jermell taking the fight, Jermall was the name being thrown into the hat to face Canelo. But as of now, reports indicate that he could be fighting Benavidez’s brother, Jose Benavidez Jr.

And if some negotiations lead to a fight being made, Benavidez has backed his brother to beat Jermall, which would rule out his fight with Canelo.

Thus, this would remove any obstacles for a Canleo-Benavidez bout. And by the looks of it, Benavidez’s thought-process is clear.

Benavidez On Canelo

“I’m gonna manifest this because Canelo’s gonna beat Jermell Charlo and then Canelo’s supposed to fight Jermall Charlo. But my brother’s gonna fight him [Jermall] on my undercard. My brother’s gonna win the fight, so after we take the other Charlo out of the equation then it’s just me and Canelo right there,” Benavidez said

Nevertheless, that could all change if Jermell does end up beating Alvarez. A win for the American would most likely result in a rematch being called.

Not only that, but the demand to see a Benavidez-Canelo fight could die down if the latter does end up losing. It would justify the claims that Canelo is on the decline.

But in doing so, he may have to stop Canelo for the first time in his career, given the latter’s strength later down the stretch. Although Charlo knows what it takes to make it at the highest level, he is ultimately fighting above 154 for the first time in his career. As such, Benavidez can only see a win for the Mexican.

Benavidez On Canelo-Charlo

“I feel like it’s just too much, Jermell Charlo’s coming up too much in weight. Canelo’s strong right now, he’s comfortable at that weight class. But I’m not taking anything away from Charlo, I’m not gonna say it’s an easy fight for Canelo because it’s not, Charlo’s talented and he’s bigger than Canelo. It’s gonna be a good fight, but I feel like Canelo’s gonna take it. It might be a tough fight or Canelo might stop him in the late rounds with body shots,” Benavidez
