Benavidez & Morrell’s Explosive Weigh In – ‘See Who The Mexican Monster Is’

David Benavidez and David Morrell Jr. exchanged verbals after they made weight for their light heavyweight fight this weekend.
The winner will become the WBC mandatory for the winner of Artur Beterbiev vs Dmitry Bivol, who face off on February 22. That would be for the Undisputed Light Heavyweight Title. Benavidez defeated Oleksandr Gvozdyk in his last fight in a mixed performance. While he secured a unanimous decision, he failed to stop his man.
Benavidez revealed he suffered a hand injury during the fight, which impacted him. Morrell defeated Radivoje Kalajdzic in a unanimous decision to go 11-0. Benavidez and Morrell had a fiery kick off presser. David pushed Morrell, who responded by throwing his belt at him. Benavidez vowed to show Morrell who is the best at their final presser, while the Cuban mocked his nickname ‘The Mexican Monster,’ promising a knockout. Both men hit the scales at 174.2 pounds. The duo made the 175-pound limit and had plenty to say.
Post-Weight In
“This Saturday, like I said, all the talking is done. I’m going to beat the f**k out of David Morrell… I’m going to beat the f**k out of David Morrell. He’s going to see who the Mexican Monster is this Saturday,” Benavidez
“I don’t need any keys to defeat Benavidez because I’ve already seen what he’s about, and it’s all fake. So I’m going to be ready with what I’ve got to come out on top. …One thing is to say you’re going to do it, the other one is to do it. Very, very different. Let’s see if he’s actually able to do what he says,” Morrell
Predictions
“I think at 175, I would favor Benavidez. At 168 I may favor Morrel. He is fantastic. Regardless of this fight, whatever weight class that it happens at, it’s a very tough fight. It’s a very close fight. I’m very happy it’s on the docket. [And] I can’t wait until we get there, because you never know in this sport, it’s an exciting time that we’ve got these young guys fighting each other,” Chris Algieri said
“I anticipated this to be a very 50-50 kind of fight. I expect somebody’s gonna hit the canvas, and it probably might be early, and the other person might get hurt in the fight. It’s gonna be a lot of ups and downs, ebbs and flows in this particular fight, because both guys really, really wanted it bad. And want to make a big statement. It’s going to be a lot of trash talk with the build up. So this is one of those kind of fights that the fans will actually win,” Leonard Ellerbe
