Benavidez Eyes May Fight with Jermall Charlo On Canelo Card

David Benavidez is willing to face Jermall Charlo on the undercard of Canelo Alvarez’s next fight.

The current WBC interim champion is waiting in the wings for a potential Alvarez fight. Following his win over Demetrius Andrade, a Canelo-Benavidez fight was discussed for Cinco De Mayo weekend or Mexican Independence Day. Alvarez, however, has remained coy about his next fight after confirming that he would meet Al Haymon on Monday to discuss his future. If Canelo fights someone else in May, Benavidez earmarked Charlo as a good alternative.

Benavidez On Charlo

“I think that would actually be a good idea if I can get a fight in with [Jermall] on the co-main event. I wouldn’t mind doing that. It would be good for boxing, having us both fighting on the same night. It would be really good.  I’m willing to do whatever.

“I’m not going to sit and wait for Canelo. I know I can beat everyone in this weight class [168] with no problem. So, if they want me to fight [Jermall] Charlo on the same day, I’ll fight Charlo on the same day. I just want to stay busy and get my experience,” Benavidez said

A fight against Charlo makes sense in the following ways. It would rule out another opponent for Canelo, especially if Benavidez puts in a dominant performance. At the same time, by fighting on Canelo’s undercard, Benavidez could use the opportunity to call out Alvarez once again and allege that he is ducking him. Outside of that, there is an element of revenge. Charlo has just beaten Benavidez’s brother, Jose Benavidez Jr., in a dominant display. A fight would allow Benavidez to settle the score.

“Definitely. Exactly, you couldn’t have said it any better. I definitely want to get my revenge for my brother,” Benavidez

Benavidez On Morrell Jr.

If the Charlo fight fails to get made, David Morrell Jr. has been mentioned as an option. The latter takes on Sena Agbeko on December 16th, 2023, for Showtime’s final card in boxing. Morrell is currently undefeated and heavy-handed, much like Benavidez. The Cuban has expressed his desire to face Benavidez.

However, the Mexican Monster does not see the fighter at the top of his priorities. The boxer felt he was not a big name like Charlo and Canelo. But moving down the line, the fight could happen. At the same time, Benavidez urged Morrell to fight the other big names, such as Dmitry Bivol, after he claimed he had ducked the Russian.

“Everybody is scared of him, supposedly, and Dmitry Bivol came out publically saying that he’s the one that ducked him. So, he should stop worrying about me and getting these other fights. If there’s no other fights, then I’ll definitely make a fight with David Morrell, but we’re trying, but we’re trying to make this fight happen with [Jermall] Charlo, and we’re trying to make it happen with Canelo. These are two big fights. These guys are solidified,” Benavidez
