Light heavyweight Ben Whittaker is set for his Matchroom Boxing debut on November 29 against Benjamin Gavazi, as fans picked their winner.

This fight is a crucial test for the Olympic medalist, as he seeks to expand his global profile under Matchroom. Whittaker turned down the chance to stay with BOXXER, despite their new deal with the BBC to take a new direction. Whittaker’s last outing was a second-round TKO victory over Liam Cameron in April. Meanwhile, Gavazi delivered a stoppage victory against Branimir Malenica in his last bout. And with the pressure on Whittaker, there may be no better time to face him.

The Approach

Whittaker’s strategy will revolve around his superior footwork, defense, and range control. His style is often described as elusive and unconventional. His defense relies heavily on head movement, shoulder rolls, and pulling away, rather than a traditional high guard, which allows him to see punches coming and set up quick replies, such as using his straight right hand or a powerful counter hook.

The aim is to frustrate Gavazi and force him to abandon his game plan by missing wildly. Whittaker’s fast, lateral footwork will be critical in denying Gavazi the space he needs to unleash combinations. He will use a snapping, accurate jab to control the range and keep the German fighter at bay, allowing him to dictate the pace from the outside.

Gavazi will look to turn this title bout into a physical, uncomfortable fight, actively denying Whittaker the space and distance required for his elusive style. He will need to employ a disciplined, stalking approach, using his jab primarily to block Whittaker’s vision and constantly push him toward the ropes.

To drain Whittaker’s energy and slow his fast footwork, Gavazi must employ high-volume combinations, targeting the body with heavy hooks and straight shots. This tactic will also test Whittaker’s durability and conditioning, especially given the pressure on him in his debut. With Whittaker still being early in his professional career and carrying the pressure of a major promotional debut, Gavazi will be aggressive from the opening bell. He needs to leverage his own recent stoppage victory and attempt to land clean, powerful shots early to disrupt Whittaker’s famous composure and test his chin.
