Aspinall Says He Received Death Threats For Wanting The Jon Jones Fight

Tom Aspinall, the current UFC Interim Heavyweight Champion, has confirmed that he received death threats for trying to make the Jon Jones fight.

Aspinall has had Jones on his radar since returning from a serious knee injury he sustained in his only UFC loss against Curtis Blaydes. The Brit bounced back impressively with first-round knockout wins over Marcin Tybura and Sergei Pavlovich. Jones, however, has yet to fight since his first-round submission win over Cyril Gane.

The victory secured him the Heavyweight Title after he had been out of the sport for around three years. He was on course to defend his belt against Stipe Miocic at UFC 295. But an injury to his pectoral muscle in sparring meant he had to pull out. Aspinall then called for the UFC to strip Jones so he could fight Miocic for the full belt, with the winner facing Jones.

Aspinall On Jones

“I think Jon Jones should be stripped from the title to be honest, because everyone else does when they get injured like that. I don’t see why he’s still got it. [And] I don’t understand that. I think I should be the real champion right now.

“It’s hard to say without sounding rude, but who’s asked about Jon Jones and Stipe anymore? Why do we get this legacy fight, and they get to live by their own rules? What’s a legacy fight, a retirement fight for a title? I want to fight Stipe and then I want to fight Jon Jones,” Aspinall stated

Dana White rejected those claims as Aspinall could either defend the interim title he won against Pavlovich or sit on the sidelines and wait for the winner of Jones-Miocic. Aspinall’s cause has not been helped by the further news of Jones’ elbow surgery. With no definitive timeline on when Jones will return, the Brit was frustrated. The onset of death threats has now exacerbated that.

Aspinall’s Worries

“People on the internet are wild. You have to kind of see it for what it is. It’s not real life, a lot of it comes from jealousy. People don’t like to see other people do well, unfortunately that’s the way of the world. With a lot of love comes a lot of hate as well. That’s the way the cookie crumbles unfortunately.”

“I’m human so it affects me sometimes. But I try to just turn a blind eye to it and just crack on. The internet is a strange place. I clicked on my message requests by accident the other day and people are sending me death threats for wanting to fight Jon Jones, who’s the best in the world and it’s madness. You just think what the f*** is going on in your life that you want to say that you want to kill somebody else because they want to fight, it’s madness,” Aspinall stated

Aspinall will have to bide his time, but he must keep winning in the meantime. Find all the latest boxing news and MMA breaking updates on
