Aspinall Could Get Knocked Out Like Rousey If He Fights Jones
Tom Aspinall could get knocked out if he fights UFC Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones after Chael Sonnen drew a comparison with Ronda Rousey.
Aspinall is next in line to face the winner of Jones or Stipe Miocic, who are expected to fight at the end of this year. Their UFC 295 clash was cancelled after Jones withdrew with a pectoral muscle injury. Aspinall worked himself into a title shot after stopping Sergei Pavlovich and Curtis Blaydes in his last two fights. Tom has shown a tendency to get his opponent out of the octagon quickly, which could backfire against him if he went the distance with Jones.
Aspinall has 15 MMA wins, all of which have been by KO or submission. All of his UFC fights have ended in the first round except for one fight. Rousey had 11 first-round stoppages and five in the UFC, as she was the UFC Bantamweight Champion.
Sonnen Reacts
As she did so, she set the record for the most successful title defenses at six before Valentina Shevchenko broke the record. However, Rousey’s career ended on poor terms. Holly Holm and Amanda Nunes knocked her out in her last two fights. She would then leave the UFC and never return. Sonnen felt Aspinall risks something similar if he were to fight Jones.
“I’m not sure you understand that. That is not helpful, that is not a good thing. It looks good and it sounds good, it’s not good! When you find yourself in a fight harder than you’re used to, it’s a problem for everybody. It is the number one reason that Ronda lost to Holly Holm. [And] It was not the right leg kick. It was because the six other girls that Ronda had been in there with checked out collectively in a shorter time than Holly had made it. That was the problem. It’s a problem for everyone. There’s nothing you can do about it,” Sonnen said
And yet, those who know Jones have claimed that Aspinall can exploit weaknesses. Frank Mir, who is a former UFC Heavyweight, highlighted Jones’ weakness. They had the chance to spar with him, saying that Bones struggles to deal with speed.
Jones’ Weaknesses
Apsinall is known for having electric hand speed for a heavyweight, as he can end the fight once he lands. But Jones uses his range well before trying to use his wrestling to combat that. That may lead to a chess match, which is why the fight is an intriguing match-up.
“Machida is one of the first guys to win a round against Jon, even Vitor Belfort was having success with him on the feet with speed.”And then Dominick Reyes that was a close fight… I would have agreed if that had gone either way. And again, movement, speed. So Tom kind of represents that, he’s a good, fast, explosive heavyweight with good movement so there is a chance he could be a very dangerous fight for Jon because some of his attributes are weaknesses for Jon,” Mir stated
