In the latest boxing news, Demetrius Andrade has named David Benavidez as the best super middleweight, picking him over Canelo Alvarez, as the fighter prepares to face the Mexican Monster on November 25th, 2023.
Alvarez may be the current undisputed champion at 168, however, Benavidez has been waiting in the wings for a title shot after having been the WBC mandatory for over a year.
And as part of that process, the two undefeated fighters face off with the winner becoming in line to face Canelo for all the belts. Benavidez is seen as the favorite, given that he is the naturally bigger 168-pound fighter.
Despite Andrade being a two-weight world champion, that success has been at 154 and 160 pounds. Therefore, there are question marks over whether the power can transcend at 168.
But for all the obstacles that may be coming his way, Andrade recognised that a win over Benavidez would propel him to the top of the division.
Andrade On Benavidez
“He’s going to bring the pressure, and I’m going to be sitting there looking to pick him apart. A lot of those other fights aren’t the same motivation as this fight,” said Andrade when told that some fans think he’s getting older. It’s better now at this age, 36 or 37, because it wouldn’t happen then. So, I feel this is the time for this fight to be made if it was ever going to be made. I’ve only had one fight at 168 to get the rust off, and now I’m fighting the best guy in the world at 168 lbs,” Andrade said
Nevertheless, Andrade has been a fighter who has been avoided throughout his career. But at the age of 35, the chances of securing those mega fights are diminishing, which is why a win over Benavidez on fight night will be crucial moving forward for the fighter’s chances.
Benavidez On Morrell Jr.
Meanwhile, David Benavidez has picked David Morrell Jr. as the next biggest threat in the super middleweight division apart from himself.
This is despite the fact that Benavidez is preparing to face a tricky fighter in the form of Andrade. After all, the latter also remains unbeaten like the Mexican.
But rather than seeing the latter as the biggest threat, Benavidez pointed towards Morrell Jr. The Cuban is undefeated, with a record of 9-0, which includes eight wins by way of knockout.
Prior to the Andrade fight, Benavidez had been linked with a fight against Morrell Jr. However, that would end up falling through. But in the meantime, Benavidez did give the super middleweight his credit.
“David Morrell [is the biggest threat], but [my title will come at] both. 168 & 175,” Benavidez stated
Ultimately, Benavidez and Andrade have a score to settle. And once fight night is over, one boxer will lose their undefeated record.
While Benavidez is expected to win, Andrade has shown that he is capable of defying the odds, which is why the bout holds so much significance. Time will tell how it all plays out.
