In today’s boxing news, Janibek Alimkhanuly, the WBO middleweight champion, overcame the IBF champion Vincenzo Gualtieri with a sixth-round knockout to unify the division.

Alimkhanuly Vs. Gualtieri

The bout was a tale of two undefeated middleweights, which showed, as there was very little to separate the two fighters. However, it was Gualtieri who had the better of the start.

The former connected with an overhand right hand that breached Alimkhanuly’s guard, while the latter sought to use the jab to close the distance and counter with his uppercuts.

That was shown in the second round as Alimkhanuly used the jab to pepper Gualtieri’s eye, as the latter switched back to the natural southpaw stance in a change of tactic.

There was very little between the two fighters in round four, as Gualtieri’s straight left hand was the highlight for the boxer. However, Alimkhanuly merely stepped on the gas.

In the fifth round, the new champion doubled up with his jab before landing a huge uppercut. Gualtieri’s legs almost gave way as he resorted to the ropes.

Although Gualtieri managed to get past the round, the writing was on the all. And it came to a head in the sixth.

Alimkhanuly landed with a left uppercut and as he sought to finish the bout, the referee ended proceedings.

A win allowed Alimkhanuly to become the first Kazakh to unify since Gennadiy Golovkin. Meanwhile, Gualtieri’s reign as IBF champion lasted just three months.

Reaction

“What we would love to do is add the other two belts to our collection. We are going to talk to our promoter Top Rank to make that happen,” Alimkhanuly

“Congratulations to Janibek. He was the better fighter. I think it was a little early to end the fight but congratulations to him. He had a good punch, you can see that in my face. I think it was a little bit early but he won and I have respect for him,” Gualtieri

Co-Main Event

Keyshawn Davis beat Nahir Albright via a majority decision to take his unbeaten record to 10-0.

It was the second straight fight that Davis went the distance, as the boxer showed a different string to his bow. From the off, Davis’ right hand connected as Albright remained on the outside.

Albright’s punches were landing short, as Davis shaded the early parts of the fight. It was clear that Albright sought to close the distance without being countered.

However, it almost cost the boxer as Davis countered with an overhand right that almost sent Albright to the floor in round four.

During the second half of the fight, Davis upped the ante by disrupting Albright’s rhythm. The latter’s vision had been impacted after complaining of issues in the seventh.

However, after being cleared to go on, Davis inflicted further damage. Keyshawn had his opponent on the back foot only to be hit by Albright’s right hand in the eighth. The round ended with both fighters resorting to clinching.

Despite that little moment of success, Davis dominated even if the fight was closer on the cards: 96-94, 97-93, 95-95.
