In today’s MMA latest headlines, Alexa Grasso, the UFC flyweight champion, has revealed that she has undergone hand surgery following her split draw with Valentina Shevchenko at Noche UFC.
During the bout on Mexican Independence Day, both fighters faced each other in a high-octane bout that ended in a controversial decision.
Mike Bell’s 10-8 scorecard in the final round for Shevchenko deprived her of victory, with many having the perception that she had done enough to win at least three rounds.
In the aftermath, Shevchenko had called for a rematch in order to settle the rivalry once and for all. Those comments were also backed up by Dana White.
And yet, Shevchenko recently underwent surgery on her thumb which she had injured during the fight that is likely to keep her out for three months before she can train.
Shevchenko’s Injury During Grasso Fight
“My understanding is like two or six weeks, something like that, in a cast, but I still can do exercise and maintain my shape just no hand. After that, it’s going to be recovery and as I’m told, three or four months in full action, so it doesn’t sound that scary,” Shevchenko said
And now Grasso has gone under the knife with surgery on her broken hand. The timing of the news has taken MMA fans aback since it has been a month after the fight before she had decided to undergo surgery.
That will delay the calls for a rematch, but once the recuperation process is done, the MMA fighter is looking to get the trilogy on.
Grasso’s Injury
“What are the odds huh? In the fight I fractured my hand; we are used to not letting the pain stop us in anything and although it hurt I didn’t think it was serious until I wanted to go back to training and I realized my hand was still very bad. The surgery was a success thank you very much Doctor Arroyo and Doctor Zarate, you are angels! fully trust my health in your hands #ANDSTILL and I know I will be MEGA ready for that trilogy,” Grasso said
That admission will prove telling for the rematch moving forward. The narrative has now been set that both fighters may not have been at their peak physically during the fight.
Shevchenko admitted that she had injured her thumb during the fight, but still managed to go the distance anyway on the basis that she did not want to let her fans down.
“I injured my hand in the first round. I hit with a cross and it landed on the side and affected my thumb. I could feel it right away, in the first round. That was the reason I could not finish my submission. This affected me to pull my grip. I had the position when I was on her back but I couldn’t close my arm because of the finger,” Shevchenko stated
Meanwhile, Grasso’s injury which has been declared now could arguably have hampered her, which is why the rematch appears more likely.
