Adesanya Only Wants The Biggest Fights; Jones Blasts Aspinall
Israel Adesanya is only targeting the best fights at the latter end of his career.
In a major upset, the former UFC middleweight champion lost his belt to Sean Strickland at UFC 293. He was outfought, getting dropped to a unanimous decision loss. That followed after he secured the belt by stopping Alex Pereira in their rematch. After losing to Strickland, Adesanya announced he was taking an extensive break from the sport since he intended to fight for fun, not belts.
That ruled out a Strickland rematch or the prospect of a trilogy with Pereira. With UFC 300 coming up, fans wondered if Adesanya was in line for a return on that card. So far, there is nothing to indicate that this will happen. And in the future, Adesanya only wanted the big fights.
Adesanya’s Future
“Like I said, four fights in 14 months. I know I’m on the back end of my career. I know when I’m done with this, I’m going to miss it. So I was trying to do as much as I can. Then I realized it’s not about quantity, it’s about quality. I’m still going to enjoy this. When I fight, I know I’ll fight (this year). I don’t know when I’m going to fight, but when I fight, it’s going to be quality. It’s not going to be quantity,” Adesanya said
Elsewhere, Jon Jones has hit back at Tom Aspinall’s insistence that he be stripped of his title following his injury. Jones injured his pectoral muscle during a sparring session in training, which meant he pulled out of his fight with Stipe Miocic at UFC 295. He was expected to be out for some time after undergoing surgery.
This has been exacerbated following another surgery on his elbow. Aspinall has requested that Jones be stripped so he can face Miocic with the winner then taking on Jones. Dana White rejected that notion, leaving Aspinall to defend his interim title or sit on the sidelines to face the winner of Jones-Miocic. Now Jones has slammed Aspinall with suggestions he is not interested in facing him.
Jones Vs. Aspinall
“Tom, you talking about someone’s ego running wild is one of the most hypocritical things ever., You literally haven’t kept my balls out of your mouth since you won that imaginary championship. Both you and Serge have zero championships between your name. It’s funny that you actually walk around feeling like the world champion. Especially when the actual champion is undefeated, and had a flawless last performance. Literally didn’t get hit my last fight.
“What I refuse to do is be like a lot of these other fighters who stuck around too long. That just won’t happen. Your boy Bones Jones over here, despite what a lot of people may like to think. I’ve set myself up pretty well in life. I want Stipe for my résumé, outside of that, I need nothing else from this sport. I came, I saw, and I conquered. Facts,” Jones stated
