Ben Whittaker faces Braian Nahuel Suarez in a light heavyweight clash on Saturday in Liverpool, as we preview this fight.

Whittaker was elevated to the main event after former world champion Callum Smith was forced to withdraw from his clash with David Morrell due to a training camp injury. For Whittaker, this fight is a crucial “stay busy” hurdle before a highly anticipated U.S. debut later this year. Whittaker enters the fight with a first-round knockout of Benjamin Gavazi. Suarez boasts a staggering 95% knockout ratio, with 20 of his 21 wins coming by way of stoppage.

Pre-Fight

“You know what we do – The Surgeon is gonna turn up and put on a spectacular performance. It’s gonna be good to be back. I’m excited and locked in. “I’m in a big position with Matchroom behind me. I have to win and look good. If you don’t win, the show doesn’t go on. I can fight from all angles, and now it’s showing that I can hurt people, too. It’s going to be an exciting year for me. I know how good I am, but you can’t rush the process. I want to get there as a champion,” Whittaker said

“The plan with Ben is we’ll keep him nice and active. He was supposed to be the co-main on the Boots [Ennis] card [in April]. Now he will be back in the UK next month and then co-main event stateside in June,” Eddie Hearn stated

The Approach

Whittaker’s primary goal will be to utilize his height and reach advantage to keep Suarez on the end of his jab. By keeping Suarez at range, Whittaker forces the Argentinian to lung in, creating the perfect counter-punching opportunities. Whittaker’s footwork is his greatest defensive asset. He will likely employ a “hit-and-move” strategy—landing two-punch combinations and then pivoting out.

Suarez’s approach will be built on sustained pressure and physical intimidation. Suarez knows that at range, he loses. He will likely sacrifice his own defense in the first two rounds to “walk through” Whittaker’s jab and get into the pocket. His goal is to turn a technical boxing match into a brawl.
