Carlos Adames will defend his WBC middleweight title against Austin Williams on March 21, as we preview this upcoming fight.

After a brief period as interim champion, Adames was elevated to full WBC titleholder in May 2024 following the stripping of Jermall Charlo. Adames has successfully defended the title twice, beating Terrell Gausha and fighting to a contentious split draw against Hamzah Sheeraz in February 2025.

Meanwhile, Williams enters the ring as the WBC’s #3-ranked middleweight, having successfully navigated a difficult road back from his only professional loss—a TKO defeat to Hamzah Sheeraz in June 2024. Williams has put together a four-fight win streak, including a win over Patrice Volny and a unanimous decision over Wendy Toussaint on January 31, 2026.

“Life doesn’t repeat opportunities – if you escaped once, consider it a miracle. Destiny forgives once. After that, it collects. Not everyone gets two warnings. He already used one. Danger is coming to Orlando on March 21,” Adames

“The second Ammo Show will be electric. This is the moment I become WBC Champion of the World and begin my reign. Ten years of dedication all boiling down to one night, don’t miss it,” Williams

“I am delighted to be able to deliver Ammo this fight so quickly. Ammo was obviously devastated in New York, but he held it together and got ten more rounds in, and now he gets the chance to become World champion as a headliner. I’m delighted for him and while it’s a tough champion to beat in Carlos, I know Ammo will give everything he has to achieve his dream and capture the famous green and gold belt,” Eddie Hearn

Adames’ objective will be to eliminate the distance Williams needs for his southpaw combinations. Against Williams, expect Adames to target the body early, specifically aiming to slow the challenger’s lateral movement. By forcing Williams to fight with his back against the ropes, Adames can negate “Ammo’s” speed.

In his controversial draw against Sheeraz in early 2025, Adames was criticized for a slow start that allowed the challenger to build an early lead. To avoid a repeat, Adames will likely look to establish dominance in the opening three rounds, using a stiff jab to set up the overhand right—a punch Williams has historically been susceptible to due to his tendency to stand too upright.

Against Adames, Williams must use his 78-inch reach to maintain the distance. Tactically, he will likely focus on his lead right hook to disrupt Adames’ forward momentum and circle away from the champion’s power hand. If Williams can keep the fight in the center of the ring, he can use his superior footwork to “pepper” Adames with combinations before resetting.
